The University of North Carolina complies with Comprehensive Standard 220.127.116.11 of the SACS Principles of Accreditation which requires that an institution identify expected student learning outcomes for its educational programs, assess the extent to which it achieves those outcomes, and provide evidence of improvement based on analysis of the results.
Each academic department is required to have a plan for the assessment of student learning outcomes unique to the individual department/program. Each plan includes a department mission statement, goals and objectives, assessment methods, and use of assessment data. In defining expected results, departments indicate their expectations of student performance. Expected results are explicit and precise statements about what the department expects students to learn. They are specific in terms of the areas of knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, communication skills, and appreciations in which graduates of the department will be proficient.
