Safety and Health Manual - Chapter IX: medical emergency procedures

Police and Public Safety Policy  PS 09 00j

A. Purpose. To outline the policy and procedures relating to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke's procedure for medical emergencies.

B. Scope. This applies to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, all University employees, students, and activities.

C. Policy. The safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors is of utmost importance to the University's Board of Trustees and Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

D. General. Although the majority of medical incidents and campus accidents will not require emergency medical attention, there will be occasions when emergency medical personnel will need to be summoned. In addition to the need for emergency medical assistance, ambulance transportation services may be needed for the sick or injured, depending upon the seriousness of the incident/accident.

Request of Emergency Medical Assistance: The University's faculty or staff member who is first at the scene of the emergency medical incident/accident should summon emergency medical personnel and/or an ambulance. In all cases the University Police and Student Health Services are to be notified as soon as possible.

Should the incident/accident appear to be life threatening, the faculty/staff member should not hesitate to summon necessary emergency medical assistance. If the emergency occurs during regular working hours - 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. - the switchboard operator will notify the University Police as to the location of the emergency. If no one is available, to direct the emergency personnel to the scene, the switchboard operator should notify the Student Health Services, ext. 6219, to perform the task. Should the switchboard be closed when emergency medical assistance is needed, the faculty or staff member should dial the University Police at extension 6235 or 6795. Should no one answer at those numbers, the caller should dial "9-911" from a campus phone, 911 from the nearest pay phone, or use one of the campus' emergency phones. The caller should state very clearly his/her name, the nature of the emergency, and the approximate location of the emergency.

In all cases, if emergency assistance is summoned, the University Police must complete the University Incident Reporting Form and forward it to the appropriate authorities. This form must be completed as soon as the emergency is over - but not later than twenty-four (24) hours following the emergency. The form is available from the University Police.
