Dr. Debby Hanmer and Biology Major Annette Hagans Present their Research at the Geochemical Society Conference (October 2010)


Photo of Annette Hagans and Debby HanmerBiology Major Annette Hagans and her mentor Dr. Debby Hanmer presented a research poster “Sorption Characteristics of Imidacloprid on Biochar”at the annual meeting of the Geochemical Society, held in Denver, Colorodo, on 31 October 2010.

Their work showed essentially no uptake of the insecticide imidacloprid on either free biochar or on biochar mixed with soil, as indicated by spectrophotometry and microprobe analysis. Co-authors on the poster were Drs. Sivanadane Mandjiny, Steven Singletary, and Lee Phillips.

Funding for their research was provided by the Native American-serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI) program and the Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity (PURC) Center of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
