Prof. Erika Young Receives Award for AISES Poster (December 2012)
While members of the faculty were winding down their fall semester, Prof. Erika Young headed for Anchorage, Alaska, to attend the national conference of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). She was not alone. Traveling with Prof. young were regional members of AISES from the University --- Dr. Velinda Woriax and Ms. Valerie Deese, and students Olivia Bullard, Layla Locklear, Austin Lowry, Chris Lowery, Caridad Pino, and Tiffany Scott.
Prof. Young presented her doctoral research poster, entitled “Nekton utilization of marshes in front of bulkheads as a function of marsh width,” in the Ph.D. Division of the Graduate Research Competition. Her poster was awarded second place with a cash award of $850!
Prof. Young will shortly be awarded a doctoral degree from the Marine Science Department at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her laboratories studies were based at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, and her fieldwork was conducted at numerous sites along North Carolina’s coast. She has been teaching in the Department of Biology since completing her doctoral course work and field research.
