Faculty Senate Academic Support Committee Report

24 x 7 Help Desk for Blackboard

DoIT has joined a UNC General Administration contract SunGard Collegis which provides around the clock help desk services to the UNCP faculty and students. This “tier 1 support” is available by calling 800-630-7306. The call center, located in Maitland, FL, has direct contact with our on-campus technical staff who will handle the behind the scenes issues. The Help Desk located in Oxendine Science Building will continue to handle non-Blackboard-related issues during normal business hours.

Student Fees

A proposal was submitted to the Student Fees Committee requesting a $50 per FTE increase in the Student E&T fee as well as a $90 per FTE special fee. The $50 fee is to address currently unfunded software maintenance costs that have resulted from the Banner project. The special fee is to address current capital infrastructure needs.

The Committee recommended the E&T fee be increased by $30 per student FTE and that the Special Fee be levied at $55. The Chancellor proposed to the Board of Trustees, and it was approved, that the E&T fee be increased by $26 and the Special Fee be increased by $80. The proposals must still be approved by the Board of Governors.

If approved, the $26 increase in E&T fees is expected to generate an additional $251,605. However, only $226,445 will be directed to recurring Banner costs since 10% of the E&T is allocated to consumable supplies costs for the science labs. The $80 special fee is expected to generate approximately $2,500,000.

Computer Replacement

194 lab computers were replaced with new equipment during the Winter break. This is causing a “ripple” of replacements as we use the replaced equipment to advantage (expected net moves are 194 x 3). We are also in the process of replacing outdated faculty computers (51 computers).

Network upgrade

DoIT accomplished a major upgrade of the campus network during the winter break. This major activity was accomplished with minimum downtime and disruption. However, we continue to deal with minor resulting issues.

Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative – Annual conference

The 2006 TLTC Conference will again be held at the North Raleigh Hilton. Dates are March 15 – 17. The deadline for proposals was October 17. A total of 5 proposals were submitted from UNCP. Proposal review and selection has been completed. This year, as in years past, the Distance Education unit under Dr. Charles Tita plans to sponsor a limited number of attendees.

Personnel Issues

Mike Oxendine, DoIT’s popular telephone service person, suffered foot and ankle amputation prior to the winter break. During the break, Mike had multiple bypass surgery and suffers from additional complications. Please keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers.

Meanwhile, DoIT is covering Mike’s responsibilities by juggling staff resources.
