Faculty Senate Academic Support Committee Report

SPARC

One of the driving forces for the forthcoming strategic plan is: “RAPIDLY EVOLVING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WILL MANDATE TECH SUPPORT AND EDUCATION TO OFFER ON-LINE COURSES AND REMAIN COMPETIVE.”

The Strategic Planning and Resources Council has conducted one university-wide forum to collect input on IT. The minutes of the first forum are available on the SPARC site on Blackboard (use your email login to access). A second open forum is scheduled for October 24th.

IS Audit

A team of 5 information system auditors from the North Carolina Auditors Office will begin an audit of DoIT on October 30, 2006. The last IS audit was conducted in 2001-2002.

PACE

President Bowles has initiated his President’s Advisory Committee on Efficiency and effectiveness (PACE). The goal is to focus more of our resources on the core functions of teaching, research and service. In the words of the PACE committee: “This [IT] is likely to be the biggest system wide opportunity examined by the working groups. Moreover, all the sub-functions do lend themselves to system-wide versus local scrutiny.”

Currently, UNC campuses are participating in two concurrent activities. Four systemwide committees, including one for IT, are collecting ideas of how the system and institutions can become more efficient and effective while reducing costs. On the individual campuses, Chancellors are collecting ideas from all units on ideas for becoming more efficient and effective within the institution. DoIT is engaged in both of the activities.

Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative – Annual conference

The 2007 Conference will again be held at the North Raleigh Hilton. Dates for the 2007 conference are March 21-23, 2007. Incidentally, Maurice Mitchell is serving as chair of this year’s program committee.
