Faculty Senate Academic Support Committee Report

Blackboard hosting

UNCP is one of a number of UNC institutions that is actively investigating centralized hosting of its Blackboard CMS. I met with members of the UNCP Blackboard Users Group and others to discuss this initiative as well as alternatives to Blackboard as a delivery platform for online, hi-bred and CMS augmented courses.

Open Source Course Management Systems

Debbie Thompson, Education, and Ken Mentor, Criminal Justice, are representing UNCP on a statewide study of open source course management systems. Such open source systems offer UNCP options as we investigate alternatives to the current Blackboard CMS.

The modules that make up the student information system of Banner are “going live” this month. The admissions and financial aid modules, as well as the “native Banner” Student module are already live. The part that most faculty see, BraveWeb, will go live on March 19th.

Students will register for Summer in the legacy SIS and for Fall in the new Banner. However, this transition will be essentially transparent to the students. They will see the registration options in BraveWeb as just two menu choices.

Two items of note: There is a new front end to BraveWeb, with a new login.  The new front end has the same look and feel (branding) of the rest of the UNCP website. And, now, all who enter BraveWeb will use the same credentials they use to access email, Blackboard, etc.

For More information, see the forthcoming issue of Banner Bits ‘N Bytes.

IS Audit

The onsite phase of the audit was concluded on December 6, 2006. We received the draft of the audit report on March 1 and are currently addressing the draft findings. We expect to meet the auditors at the end of this month to discuss the findings and our proposed responses. We will have 10 days to file our formal responses. After that period, the Office of the State Auditor will issue its report. General Administration will then give us 90 days to remediate any remaining issues.
