November 2011

Academic Support Services Subcommittee Report

DoIT Monthly Report
November 2011

    I. Client Services

    • Assistant CIO Cindy Saylor:
      • Coordinated an all-day Apple training session to learn more about new operating systems, deployment strategies, and security.
    • Jillena Locklear, Tabitha Locklear, Liz Cummings, and others worked on the SCCM deployment to campus labs.
    • Rob Hughes and Daryl Burgwyn completed work adding a fourth host to the Library Electronic Classroom thin client configuration and a RAM upgrade to 16GB.  Each host now supports seven thin clients instead of the previous 10-10-8 configuration.  The increase in RAM and the reduction of client load also allows more RAM to be available to each client, increasing performance.
    • Johnathan Kerns and Wanda Hunt worked on a number of projects:
      • Completed campus computer lab maps via LabStats so students can visit a webpage to view in real time what labs have available machines. The maps should be available for the public view by the end of the semester.
      • Designed BraveMail mobile devices setup web page, soon to be published online with other webpage updates by Melanie Jacobs.
      • Distributed IT Security Awareness posters throughout the campus as part of a campaign to alert users of the need to be cognizant of security risks.
      • Created training videos for LabTechs to assist students with accessing Blackboard Collaborate and with generating LabStats usage reports.
      • Collaborated with James Lewis to create DoIT TechTips YouTube videos. An example can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhCEdxQi9ZM.
      • Modified the RIAA Infringement procedure to include an educational initiative for students who violate the policy.
    • Robby Gaddy fixed a long-standing issue with the Chancellor Board Room desktop microphones for recording meetings. Robby also installed metal pegboards in Jacobs Media Services area for more efficient storage and retrieval of hardware for installations and repairs. He also assisted Tab and Daryl with a number of projects including installing and updating software, disabling speakers, renaming computers, and creating inventory documentation.
    • Melanie Jacobsorganized McGraw Hill Connect training for Client Services staff and the Blackboard Advisory Committee.

    III. Network Services

    System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
SCCM has been successfully deployed in several labs across campus.  Network and Operations staff have deployed several virtual servers, setup an SQL database, a secure Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and secure network access as part of the various tasks necessary for the initial deployment.  More virtual servers and configuration will continue as the complex solution is developed, deployed, and used on a broadening scale.

    University Village Apartments Wireless Project
Network Services is working with Housing on a project to survey and deploy wireless network connectivity to the University Village Apartment Complex located on the Northeast corner of campus adjacent to Cypress Hall.  The project will provide wireless coverage throughout the five apartment buildings, clubhouse, and outdoor areas.  The project is hoped to be completed before the Spring 2012 semester begins.

HVAC Upgrade in Lumbee Secondary Data Center
Facilities Management is leading a project to install redundant cooling within the 3rd floor telecommunications room.  The project will involve expansion of the room, the installation of an in-room HVAC unit, and expansion of the fire suppression system.  This project will be completed by the end of November.

    Outages
    Email Outage Wednesday, November 2
A problem with one of our Exchange email servers cause a short-term inability to send emails from campus accounts.  The problem was diagnosed and resolved by 9:30am.  All emails generated during the outage where queued and delivered once the problem was resolved.  Emails from outside were not effected.
