XP and Office 2003 End of Life
Division of Information Technology
UNC Pembroke

Please be advised that Microsoft will cease providing all support for the Windows XP operating system and Office 2003 on April 8, 2014. This means Windows XP will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft and will be extremely vulnerable to malware and outside attacks. (

Many of our campus computers have already been migrated to Windows 7, including all standard lab and classroom machines and many office production desktops/laptops. PCs purchased in the in the last two years arrived already imaged with the Windows 7 operating system. Additionally, any machine that has been (or will need to be) reimaged is migrated to Windows 7, unless there is a compatibility issue with a required business application or attached equipment.

However, many machines on campus are still in need of transitioning to Windows 7 before April 2014. DoIT’s Client Services will be spearheading the endeavor to migrate all remaining Windows XP machines by mid-March, and we request your assistance and support in this effort.

Below is a list of machines that we will be targeting. If your area has machines that fall into these categories, please contact the DoIT Help Desk at 6260 or to schedule a time for any or all machines to be migrated to Windows 7.

  • Any known desktop or laptop running Windows XP
  • Any HP (Hewlett-Packard) machine
  • Mac computers running dual boot or parallels
  • Any machine that is over five years old
  • Departmental laptops or extra machines not currently assigned to individuals
  • Special lab machines, particularly those in the sciences that a connected to equipment to run experiments
  • Computers that have not been connected to the wired network in the last two years

Visit from a particular machine to see if it requires upgrading.

In the event that any machine cannot be migrated to Windows 7 due to the machine’s inability to run the upgraded operating system, DoIT will work with the individual department to find a suitable replacement from our used inventory. If a particular application or device will not run on Windows 7, we need your assistance in helping your area upgrade the necessary software or equipment so it can be used with the newer operating system.

Lastly, any computer that is running Windows XP on April 1, 2014 will be disconnected from the campus network, both wired and wireless, and will have no further network access until the upgrade is completed or the computer is replaced.
