Invisible yet essential:
power solutions

Most mornings, you turn on your computer to check your e-mail and retrieve phone messages. We don’t normally think about whether we will have electricity. All university departments rely on centralized computing systems to some degree. The availability of those systems is also depended upon reliable power.

Eaton Corporation, a manufacturer of backup power systems, recently featured DoIT in a customer success story because of the installation of new uninterruptible power systems (UPS) in the data centers. The article says, “Beneath the tranquil first impression [of UNCP] is a sophisticated technological infrastructure that keeps the campus humming and its students leaning.” The university has grown so much that it is crucial to sustain an infrastructure by acquiring the best technologies available in the market.

“I am pleased that Eaton recognized us as a best practice case for higher education,” said Tom Jackson, executive director of DoIT and chief technology officer. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure excellent services to the campus.”

Eaton Corporation recently installed three UPS units between the power source and our servers. Two university data centers – located in Oxendine Science Building and Lumbee Hall – host the 88 servers that control the university-wide network, including e-mail, shared storage, telephony, and voice messaging systems. The centers are under strict temperature and humidity control and fully protected by these Eaton units from being damaged.

DoIT network administrator, Barry Graves said, “This is essential, behind-the-scene work, but the university would not be able to function without these types of devices.”
