Welcome! We live in a world of words. The means of delivery has changed over the centuries from vellum manuscripts to paper books to pixels on a screen, but verbal language continues to be the primary means by which people everywhere share ideas. Knowing that the people who will lead and succeed in the future are those who can use language effectively, the Department of English and Theatre helps students become strong readers, writers, and speakers.

Do you have questions about the English or Theatre major? If you're considering a major or minor in English, theatre, writing, or speech, you've come to the right place! Check out our brochure about our undergraduate programs. If you've ever asked yourself "What can I do with a degree in ______?" the Career Center can answer that question for you (scroll down until you see English or Theatre). If you are already a major or minor in our department, the links to the right can provide you quick access to course schedules and degree checklists.

Are you considering graduate study in English? If you are thinking about graduate school options, please see the flyer for our Master's programs, or visit the program's home page. If you are a current UNCP English or English Education major, we have a new MA in English Education admissions program just for you.

Are you looking for your instructor? You can find professors' office and phone numbers, email addresses, and office hours on our Faculty and Staff page. This map of the Dial Building can help you locate a specific instructor's office.

Do you have questions about First Year Composition? Policies and information about the courses can be found on our Writing page.

Are you looking for suggestions about what to read this summer? The faculty of English and Theatre present our second annual Summer Reading List, featuring a wide variety of books that will entertain you and keep your mind sharp.
