Professional Profiles
FEATURE WRITING MAGAZINE
DEPARTMENT OF MASS COMMUNICATIONS
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT PEMBROKE
THE PUBLICATION

Professional Profiles is a four-color printed magazine written, edited and circulated each year by students in the journalism Feature Writing course, under the guidance of Dr. Anthony Curtis, with some photography by students in the professor's Photojournalism class.

Content includes stories about, and photos of, members of the university faculty and administration.

Dr. Judy Curtis also participates in final copy editing. Layout and production of the magazine is accomplished by students in Ms. Sara Oswald's Computer-Assisted Editing and Publication Design course. The University Communications team also provides photos.

The magazine first was published in 1981, and then was published twice a year through 1985. From 1987 to 2004-2005, it was published only once a year. In 2005-2006, twice-a-year publication resumed with a Fall 2005 25th edition and a Spring 2006 26th edition. The 30th edition was published in Spring 2013.

The first 23 editions were printed in black and white. Then, for the 24th edition in 2004-2005, pages were completely redesigned and four-color printing was used throughout. The contemporary, colorful look has continued.

Professional Profiles is a student publication supported by the Office of Academic Affairs.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Each student in the Feature Writing course interviews a member of the faculty or administration and writes a feature article profiling that person for the Professional Profiles magazine.

To profile is to write...
  ...about someone
  ...a biographical sketch
...a fuller picture of a person
...a word picture of a personality
  ...information about an individual
...behavioral indicators that form a set of characteristics of an individual.
