The typical museum is a building in which objects of historical interest, works of art, scientific specimens and cultural artifacts are kept, cared for and displayed. There are:
  • history and living history museums
  • archaeology museums
  • art museums
  • science and natural history museums
  • maritime museums
  • military and war museums
  • historic house museums
  • encyclopedic museums
  • mobile and open-air museums
  • and other types.
Most museums are devoted to the procurement, care, study, and display of objects of lasting interest or value. They can be found in cities and towns anywhere.

Inexpensive storage of digital information is leading traditional museums with collections of three-dimensional artifacts to expand to virtual exhibits of their collections for public display, study and exploration from any place at any time via the Internet.

Museum shops are retail sales areas in museums. Typically, they sell reproductions of modern, historical and ancient art displayed in the museum, recreations of historic jewelry in the museum's collection, replicas of artifacts from antiquity in the museum's archaeological holdings, and other gifts and souvenirs reflecting the museum's collections.
