UNCP's virtual world campus includes an academic facility for the study of journalism and mass communication – the New Media Center.

Situated on the university's campus in the Dotoorak region of the southern continent mainland of the 3D virtual-reality Internet world Second Life, the New Media Center is designed to function as a pedagogical space with a wide array of mass media communications technologies at hand.

It's about the study of the new forms of 21st century digital media that bring together journalists, broadcasters, public relations professionals, educators, business persons, scientists, technology purveyors, and practitioners of the arts for human expression, communication, teaching and learning, and social interaction.

New Media is the convergence of Internet-mediated communications technologies via digital computers. In addition to 21st century electronic media forms, it includes the use of content from old media – books, newspapers, magazines, radio, television – in the new online environment.

Students and faculty meeting, working and studying in the virtual media center can be dispersed anywhere in the real world.

The New Media Center building is outfitted with: SLURL is short for Second Life URL, a Web address. SLURL's are direct links from the Web to locations inside Second Life. The SLURL for the UNCP New Media Center is:
