MAT 1050 Introduction to College Mathematics

This course involves the study of the real number system and its applications for decision making in society.
Reintroduction to many of the mathematical concepts necessary for solving real world problems.

This course awards three (3) credit hours for completion and recommends six (6) hours of preparation and/or review out side of class each week.

To provide students with an appreciation for and a better understanding of basic mathematical principles.
Emphasis will be on the application of critical thinking skills in order to identify and solve problems of society.

General Education Objectives
This course will address the following areas of student learning:

I Basic Skills of Communication, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving.
II General Knowledge of Mathematics.
III Lifelong Appreciation.

We will cover all the chapters in the text.

Final Exam is December 12 at 10:45 am.

Grade Components
Tests†(6) 600†points Each test will be worth 100 points.
Quizzes 100†points Approximately 25 quizzes worth 4 points each.

Attendance Policy
Attendance will be taken for record keeping purposes, but is not part of your grade for this course.
However, poor attendance tends to lower grades dramatically.
Students are responsible for all material covered even if a class is missed.

Supplemental Instruction: A Supplemental Instruction (SI) component is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of the material taught in this course. SI sessions are led by a student who has already mastered the course material and has been trained to facilitate group sessions where students can meet to compare class notes, review and discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying, and prepare for exams. Attendance at SI sessions is free and voluntary. Students may attend as many times as they choose. SI sessions begin the second week of class and continue throughout the semester. Religious Holiday Policy
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has a legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays; we must be careful not to inhibit or penalize these students for exercising their rights to religious observance. To accommodate studentsí religious holidays, each student will be allowed two excused absences each semester with the following conditions:

1. Students, who submit written notification to their instructors within two weeks of the beginning of the semester, shall be excused from class or other scheduled academic activity to observe a religious holy day of their faith. Excused absences are limited to two class sessions (days) per semester.
2. Students shall be permitted a reasonable amount of time to make up tests or other work missed due to an excused absence for a religious observance.
3. Students should not be penalized due to absence from class or other scheduled academic activity because of religious observances.

A student who is to be excused from class for a religious observance is not required to provide a second-party certification of the reason for the absence. Furthermore, a student who believes that he or she has been unreasonably denied an education benefit due to religious beliefs or practices may seek redress through the student grievance procedure.

A few problems will be assigned from each section in order to point out the important concepts covered in that section.
The tests will be derived from the homework as a method of checking progress.

Tests and Quizzes
There will be a total of six tests and about 25 quizzes given during the semester. Each test will cover the materials since the previous test. The final will be cumulative.
No make-up tests will be given without the permission of instructor and only for a valid reason. No make-up quizzes will be given for any reason.
