Q. What is the Honors College?
The Maynor Honors College (MHC), originally the University Honors College, was begun in the fall of 2001 to attract top scholars to UNC Pembroke and provide an environment that stimulates both academic and personal growth. The Honors College offers interdisciplinary educational opportunities that enhance the general curriculum in addition social and cultural opportunities outside of the classroom.
Students selected to join the program have distinguished themselves in high school or at the university level with proven record of academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. MHC participants maintain high academic standards and complete a senior project before graduation.
The Honors College is directed by the Dean in conjunction with the Honors Council, which is comprised of UNCP honors faculty. Both cooperate in the building the college and fostering student growth and development.
Q. Who is in the Honors College?
The Honors College admits a cohort of new freshmen each fall. Entering freshmen are expected to have a minimum combined SAT Math and Critical Reading score of 1100 or an equivalent ACT score of 24. Additionally, a weighted high school GPA of 3.5 is also expected.
Continuing and transfer students are also encouraged to apply. Continuing and transfer students should generally have a 3.5 GPA in 12 or more hours of college level work. Freshmen who are applying during their first semester of course work should adhere to the requirements for new freshmen.
In addition to sharing strong academic records, honors students are an interesting and diverse group. UNC Pembroke Honors scholars come from across the state of North Carolina and other states in the region. Honors students represent a variety of majors in a variety of academic disciplines including English, Business, Music, Nursing, Physics, Journalism, Philosophy and Education. Our students have a wide variety of extracurricular interests including skydiving, athletics, creative writing and music. They are intelligent and caring, concerned about the environment and the well being of our citizens.
Q. How do I become a member of the Honors College?
Students who have been admitted to UNC Pembroke can apply directly to the Honors College using an online interactive application on this website. The College has application deadlines throughout the year and admits students on a regular basis.
Q. What funding opportunities exist for honors students?
Honors students are often very competitive for university scholarships. Eligibility for the Maynor Scholarship, Maynor Study Abroad Scholarships, and the UNCP Friends of the Library Endowed Scholarship is limited to students in the Honors College, exclusively.

Q. What other sources of support exist for students?
The Honors College is also the site for the UNC Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity Center which supports faculty and students with funds for undertaking research and travel money to attend regional and national conferences to present their work. Students from across the university are also invited to participate in Research in the Capital, a UNC system initiative to highlight undergraduate research to our legislators. As members of the Council of Undergraduate Research and the National Consortium of Undergraduate Research we support student travel to these annual conferences to present their research efforts.
Q. What is a “learning community” and what are honors courses like?
Our goal in the MHC is to create a "learning community" for the freshman experience. Freshmen honors students take 2-4 courses together in their first year. They also are encouraged to live in honors housing in Oak Hall. This experience enables group cohesion in the first year that will encourage these students to work together, to compete academically, and to set an academic pace as they progress through four years at UNC Pembroke.
After the first semester honors students are integrated into the general student body but continue to maintain their friendships and often elect to take courses and form study groups together.
Current and transfer students who do not have freshmen status take honors classes and participate in the honors events in same way that freshmen do. All honors students are required to take four HON interdisciplinary seminars and four discipline specific honors courses with some of our outstanding faculty. These courses have limited class sizes and also fulfill general education requirements. In this sense, honors students get a different academic experience rather than additional course work requirements. Honors courses have included a Study of Dinosaurs, Contemporary World Issues, American Indian Cultures, Integrated Media, the Humanistic Tradition, and Sociology of Popular Culture and Sports in American Society.
Q. What is the senior project and what is it like?
During the Junior and Senior year, each honors student completes a senior project. The project can take a variety of forms and is integrated into the final two honors courses taken during those last few semesters: HON 4000 and 4500. During HON 4000 and 4500, students work with a faculty member in their major department to undertake and complete research in that discipline. Research projects in the past have included scientific investigations, historical studies, musical presentations, original compositions and website development.
Q. What co-curricular activities have taken place and what activities are planned?
Apart from the academic components to the Honors College, there is also significant emphasis placed on events outside of the classroom. Honors College students have opportunities to participate in special honors events each month, including events off campus such as honors conferences and other events abroad. As part of a network of Honors Colleges and programs, we participate in state, regional and national honors meetings with students from across the state and the country. Honors scholars have presented research and programs at meetings in Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Chicago, New Orleans and Wilmington, NC.
Q. What is the Student Honors Council? What does it do?
The Student Honors Council is elected each year from the honors college student body. It is the primary student voice within the college and takes the lead in developing events that may be of interest to honors students. The council is comprised of members of each class and serves to foster cohesion, integration, and advancement within the student body.
Q. Do I receive special recognition at graduation?
MHC students who complete the requirements of the program will receive an "honors college" diploma and special recognition at commencement. Upon leaving UNCP many honors graduates transition to graduate-level work at other esteemed institutions. Honors scholars have been accepted to area medical schools, the University of Washington – Seattle, Tulane University School of Journalism, James Madison University, UNC Wilmington, UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and the University of Colorado.
