This course will promote cultural awareness, focusing on educational, historical, and social aspects of Spain. The program will put students in direct contact with Spanish culture and society. As we tour the city and visit museums and historical landmarks, student will observe aspects of Spanish society that affect current politics, finances, social issues, etc. such as immigration, tourism, technology, urban development, conservation of historical monuments, education system, and sports.


During your nine day study abroad experience in Madrid, students will visit many historical sites including the Prado, Reina Sofia, National Museum of Archeology, National Museum of Natural Sciences, Museum of Anthropology, Museum of America, Wax Museum, Maritime Museum, Romantic Museum, etc. In addition, students will have free time to explore sites of their own interest.


Knowledge of Spanish is not required to participate in this course.

  • There will be an on-campus meeting during the first week of classes and again before departure.

Madrid Schedule

Dr. Enrique Porrua, UNCP Foreign Language Department, has developed an amazing study abroad in Madrid during spring break. This 9-day study abroad includes:

 

Day 1: Depart North Carolina
Day 2: Arrive Madrid and orientation
Day 3: El Prado Museum, National Museum of Archeology, and Parque del Retiro.
Day 4: Roman Aqueduct, Real Alcazar, Cathedral, and walking tour around Segovia.
Day 5: Palacio Real and Cathedral, Templo de Debod, Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Madrid de los Austrias.
Day 6: Museum Tissen-Bordemitza, Museum Reina Sofia, Paseo del Prado, and Museum of Natural Sciences.
Day 7: Museum of Romanticism, walking tour of traditional and 'Avant-garde' Madrid, and tour of XIX Century Madrid Cafe's.
Day 8: Botanical Garden, Maritime Museum, Museum History of Madrid.
Day 9: Museum of Lope de Vega and Museum of the Americas.  

Day 10: Depart Spain, return to North Carolina.

Study Abroad Information

Program Fee includes:

■ Roundtrip airfare from North Carolina to Madrid, Spain
■ Housing (minimum 2 students per room)
■ All entrance fees
■ Metro Pass
International Health Insurance (Required)

 

Program Fee Does Not Include:

■ UNCP Study Abroad Application Fee ($50)
■ U.S. Passport fees

■ Airline baggage fees or overweight baggage fees (if applicable).
■ Meals (except those listed above).
■ Tuition/fees for SPN 3510 – Study Abroad (3 credits total). Must be paid in full, prior to departure.

■ Books for 3-credits hours (if required).

 

Cost: $2,200

 

You must have approval from the Study Abroad Coordinator. You must be registered for SPN 3510 – Study Abroad (3 credits total). The cost of 3 credits plus fees is NOT included in the cost of the Study Abroad in Madrid.


Financial Aid

This is an approved study abroad program through the Center for International Programs and the Department of Foreign Languages, and may qualify for financial aid.

 

In order to qualify for financial aid a student must be registered for full-time studies (12-credits) in the spring. Most grants, loans, or scholarships should apply to this approved program. Please direct all questions about student financial aid eligibility to the Financial Aid Office.

 

Additional Information:


-You will need to have a valid US Passport to participate in this study abroad. Please visit the Department of State website for a US Passport application: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

 

-Students must attend a mandatory pre-departure meeting early in the spring 2013 semester.

 

-Students must travel to/from study abroad destination with group.

 

-Minimum 8 students needed to participate.

Payment Plan
Individual payment plans may be arranged with the Study Abroad Coordinator and are flexible based on a student’s individual financial situation. Please note that all deposits/payments are non-refundable, and must be paid by the deadline.
Eligibility

All students at UNC Pembroke are eligible to participate in Study Abroad, provided that they meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Freshmen students-must have completed 2 semesters of course work at UNCP and a completed UNCP Study Abroad application and application fee ($50).
  • Transfer students-completion of 15 credits in residence, minimum, at time of departure, and a completed UNCP Study Abroad Application and application fee ($50).
  • Approved program of study.
  • 2.50 GPA at time of application.
  • Register for 3-credit course at UNCP. Not included in the cost of study abroad.
  • Conduct report. Applicants must be in Good Academic Standing and have no outstanding holds at UNCP.

  • Submit a completed UNCP Study Abroad application. Available at the International Programs Office, or contact ip@uncp.edu and we will email you an application.
  • $50 study abroad application fee. Make check or money order payable to UNCP.
