Instant Messaging Netiquette

  • Check to see if the person is online. "Hi" is a good way to start a conversation.
  • Don't write in all caps. That is considered yelling. Be polite.
  • Keep messages brief and to the point.
  • Use emoticons (short for Emotion Icons) when appropriate; especially to avoid misunderstandings.
  • Do not over use acronyms.
  • Use "Away" messages when you will be away from your desk for extended amounts of time.
