The Department of English and Theatre at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke offers two concentrations of a Master of Arts in English Education, and an English concentration of a Master of Arts in Teaching. Programs are designed to be completed by full-time students in two years, though part-time students have up to five years. Classes meet during the evening to accommodate graduate students' busy schedules.
The scholars of the English Education graduate faculty bring diverse experiences and specialties to their instruction, and develop close professional relationships with their graduate students. Our graduate faculty includes current and former deans, department chairs, and teaching award winners, including several recipients of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors' Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Which program is for you?
Current UNCP undergraduates may be qualified for provisional admission to the Master of Arts in English Education while they complete their undergraduate studies. See our 4+2 program and this flyer for details.
College graduates with backgrounds in English or related fields who are admitted to the program seek advanced knowledge and skills in language, literacy, and literature for various personal and professional proposes, including preparation to teach in community colleges. Our alumni have gone on to positions in the public schools, private schools, both the public and private sectors, community colleges, higher education, and doctoral study. They are leaders, innovators, and authorities; they are committed, collaborative, and competent.
Through graduate course work, candidates for the Graduate Programs in English Education develop advanced expertise in language, literacy, literature, and pedagogy. For licensure candidates (MA or MAT), the culminating product of the graduate experience is a Capstone Portfolio and Presentation, in which the candidate demonstrates a clearly articulated, coherent philosophy of teaching. MA candidates in the Thesis Concentration complete a six-credit thesis, in which they pursue a substantial topic through sustained independent research.
