In the James B. Chavis University Center (1987, 2003), named for a Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, the lower level houses the Information Booth, a computer lab, Bert's, dining hall, the Hawk's Nest (a recreation center) comprised of a bowling alley, TV/games areas, 24-hour computer lab and student and faculty lounges; on the second floor are the offices of the University Center, Counseling and Testing Center, The Career Center, Student Involvement and Leadership, Student Government Association, Greek Life, Intramurals Program and Assocation of Campus Entertainment.

Dr. James B. Chavis was a 1963 UNCP graduate and worked 34 years at the University.
Starting as director of the Student Center, Dr. Chavis retired in 1999 as vice chancellor for Student Affairs. He served as vice chancellor for 21 years.
The James B. Chavis University Center, which opened in 1987, is named for him. He guided planning of the building, with its signature skylights, mezzanine and vaulted ceilings.
Before joining the University, Dr. Chavis was a public school teacher. During his tenure at UNCP, he took a year off in 1977 to serve the State of North Carolina as ombudsman, reporting directly to the governor.
He was a leader in his church, Mt. Airy Baptist, Pembroke Kiwanis Club, town, community and business affairs.
Dr. Chavis passed away on February 26, 2010.
