UNCP Volunteers Lay Church Foundation in St. Thomas

Summer Chavis and Nichole Winter roll out wire in preparation for pouring concrete. On an island better known for its sun, sand and surf, 12 members of UNCP's Baptist Student Union sweltered under the hot sun in St. Thomas helping to build a church.

The volunteers spent 11 days last spring helping to lay the foundation of Trinity Methodist Church. They continued their community service project by painting the Calvary Baptist Church.

The team of volunteers also had the opportunity to lead a youth leadership seminar and participate in worship and youth programs of the churches. They thoroughly impressed the locals.

"I was impressed with the effort and attitude of the students from UNCP," said site work coordinator Bob Bains.

BSU Director Ron Sanders said the trip was inspirational.

"The hot hard work, the generosity of the island people and the tropical beauty made deep impressions on our volunteers," the Rev. Sanders said.

The students participated in fund raising projects throughout the school year to pay for the trip. BSU member Kahlid Tapia '01 played host to the group at his grand parents home on St. Thomas.
