Volunteers Lay Church Foundation in St. Thomas
an island better known for its sun, sand and surf, 12 members of UNCP's
Baptist Student Union sweltered under the hot sun in St. Thomas helping
to build a church.
spent 11 days last spring helping to lay the foundation of Trinity Methodist
Church. They continued their community service project by painting the
Calvary Baptist Church.
The team of volunteers
also had the opportunity to lead a youth leadership seminar and participate
in worship and youth programs of the churches. They thoroughly impressed
"I was impressed
with the effort and attitude of the students from UNCP," said site
work coordinator Bob Bains.
BSU Director Ron Sanders said the trip was inspirational.
"The hot hard
work, the generosity of the island people and the tropical beauty made
deep impressions on our volunteers," the Rev. Sanders said.
The students participated
in fund raising projects throughout the school year to pay for the trip.
BSU member Kahlid Tapia '01 played host to the group at his grand parents
home on St. Thomas.
