State Treasurer Richard Moore Instructs Class at UNCP

Richard MooreState Treasurer Richard Moore visited the UNC Pembroke campus on Nov. 19.

Moore took time during a multi-stop visit to Robeson County to guest lecture the School of Business class of Professor Robert Guffey and offer a few insights to UNCP students from his perspective as the manager of portfolio that includes nearly $65 billion in public funds.

The class, which is currently studying how to develop a business plan, heard from the treasurer about the importance of making a good impression when presenting your business ideas to potential investors or customers.

"Managing such a large fund of money, most of which is the pension fund for the public workers of North Carolina, I get called upon by many different companies seeking to manage some of the State's money," Treasurer Moore told the class. "The firms with professionally produced materials that include information directed specifically to me are the most impressive."

"Additionally, it is the folks who have done their homework in advance - who have educated themselves about our state, and about the State Treasurer's office - who show they are serious about the work they are trying to get. I encourage everyone one of you to consider these things before going into someone's office to sell your ideas or products," Moore said.

In addition to his stop at the Pembroke campus, Treasurer Moore also made stops at Fairmont High School to present the principal, teachers and students with a banner recognizing their significant progress in improving the test scores over the past three years.

Moore also addressed the Lumberton Rotary Club, presenting more than $1,700 to its members from the Escheats and Unclaimed Property Program, a function of the State Treasurer's Office that reunites businesses and individuals with money and property that they have somehow lost track of.
