UNCP students/staff help families to a Thanksgiving feast

Although Anthony Hunt’s prospects for a Thanksgiving feast were slim, he spent the day before the holiday making sure 30 needy families had turkey on the table.

Hunt is a student at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and vice president of the Student Government Association (SGA), which organized the project.

“We’ve got 30 turkeys with dressing, cranberry sauce, pie and lots of extras,” Hunt said. “This should be a good Thanksgiving, better than mine. My parents are at Disney World.”

Hunt, SGA President Venessa Jones and Marvin Jacobs spent Wednesday putting boxes of food together for delivery later in the day.

“I called the Robeson Church and Community Center to locate families that needed help this Thanksgiving,” he said. “We had a lot of help from Sodexho too.”

Sodexho Food Services, which manages UNCP’s Cafeteria, played a major role in the Thanksgiving project.

“We offered a free meal to any student who brought in five cans of food,” said Sodexho’s John Campbell. “It worked out just right.”

The coolers at UNCP were full and Thanksgiving spirit is in the air as the SGA group took off Wednesday afternoon to deliver their feasts. Sodexho’s Campbell said the project was a match made in heaven.

“SGA bought the turkeys, and the students responded to our offer,” he said. “We had a long week, and this was a nice way to go into the holiday. It raised our spirits.”

Campbell’s chances of a Thanksgiving feast were probably better than Hunt’s. The executive chef said he had a 24-pound Turkey waiting on him at home.
