UNCP set to offer English program in China

Alex ChenThe University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s English Department in conjunction with Harbin Normal University (HNU) is creating a graduate program in China.

Harbin Normal University has over 30,000 undergraduate students, approximately 1,800 of them in the English programs. However, the university lacks a accredited staff to establish a graduate program. Vice Chancellor for International Programs, Dr. Alex Chen was asked by HNU to help.

“It’s a great opportunity for the U.S and China,” Dr. Chen said. “Our professors will be teaching them how to teach English. It’s a win-win case for the Chinese and the Americans.”

Eight UNCP faculty members are involved in the program, which is planned to start mid-January of the Spring 2005 Semester.

UNCP professors will teach English graduate courses online throughout the semester and traveling to China to conduct at least 10 days of classes in person.

Two of the required courses, Interpersonal Communication and Shakespeare, will be taught completely face-to-face over the summer.

The entire UNCP English Department was invited to participate and eight faculty members, including Dr. Patricia Valenti, coordinator of the graduate program in English education, signed-on to.

“I am very excited,” Dr. Valenti said. “It is a great opportunity for both the students and faculty involved” said Dr. Valenti.
