UNCP’s newest eatery is in Oxendine Science
Starbucks is here!
UNCP’s newest eatery, Café a la Cart, has America’s favorite coffee in an all-new campus location off the courtyard of the Oxendine Science Building.

At the southern end of campus, the coffee shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and has a classic café menu, including Krispy Kreme doughnuts, muffins, fresh fruit, bottled drinks, salads, hoagies, bagels, wraps, candy and more.
Sodexho Food Service’s Area Manger Mike Nance said it’s a matter of convenience.
“We operate two units on campus, but they are next to each other,” Nance said. “We’re going to where our customers are.”
It was difficult to find a cup of coffee of any kind on the south side of campus, and Sodexho has filled the niche.
“Our customers are on busy time schedules, so we’re coming to them to meet their needs,” Nance said.
The shop is designed as a “grab and go” operation, but it has seating inside and outside the courtyard of the renovated Oxendine Science Building. The décor is bright and colorful and coffee is hot.
On the first day of classes August 18 and first day of business for the café, students, faculty and staff found their way to the new coffee shop.
“We had a good first day even without marketing,” Nance said.
Kimberly McKenzie, a junior science major from Whiteville, appreciated the location as she checked out the salads and sandwiches.
“This is nice,” she said. “It’s a good idea.”
Carolyn Parsons, laboratory manager in the Chemistry Department, said a café is a great idea because so many students use the Science Building. And she said, “The food is good. I had a wrap for lunch. ”
The Café may become a popular lunch spot, according to Sodexho Assistant Supervisor Debra Lowery.
“Our customers say it’s a great convenience for lunch,” Lowery said. “They don’t have to leave campus and lose their parking space. ”
Heather Walters, a senior chemistry and biology major, especially appreciated the location.
“All my classes are here, so it saves me a lot of time,” Walters said.
Robert Hughes, a computing consultant with University Computing and Information Services, stopped by Friday for breakfast.
“Thumbs up for Krispy Kreme and Starbucks,” he said. “Breakfast of champions.”
