Payne named secretary to trustees, assistant to the chancellor

In an April 28 vote, University Attorney Donna Gooden Payne was affirmed as assistant secretary of the Board of Trustees of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Donna PayneThe university attorney for three years, Payne was approved this spring as the assistant to the chancellor for executive affairs. She began serving in an interim capacity in both positions in October 2004.

In her role, Payne will assume the day-to-day management responsibilities for the Office of the Chancellor while continuing to serve as chief legal counsel for the campus. For the Board of Trustees, her responsibilities will include maintaining official records and arranging administrative support for the Board’s activities.

Chancellor Meadors said the reorganization would better support the goals of both UNC Pembroke and the UNC Office of the President.

“After careful consideration, and with the support of the (UNC) Office of the President, I have reorganized my office,” Chancellor Meadors said. “I have asked Donna Payne to assume strategic planning, advisory and supervisory duties for the office.”

“I am pleased that Donna has agreed to accept this expanded role,” he said. “I think that this new arrangement will serve my office and the University well.”

Payne’s title is University Counsel and Assistant to the Chancellor for Executive Affairs. She said the expanded role is challenging, but gratifying.

“With these additional duties, I will be more directly involved in the planning and budgeting activities of the Office of the Chancellor, as well as providing supervision for the chancellor’s administrative staff,” Payne said.

An Elizabethtown, N.C., native, Payne received her undergraduate education at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she was a Morehead Scholar. She earned a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law and practiced law in Texas and in North Carolina before joining UNC Pembroke.
