UNCP begins search for a football coach

The nationwide search for a football coach for UNC Pembroke began Monday, August 15, said Athletic Director Dan Kenney.

Dan Kenney“As of 8:55 a.m. this morning (Tuesday), I have 12 completed applications in hand,” Kenney said. “In October, we will narrow the list to a workable group of finalists and in November we will invite the top candidate or candidates to campus.”

Kenney said he expected significant interest in the coaching position that may result in 100-150 applications. The UNCP Board of Trustees voted in late 2004 to begin football play in fall 2007.

Chancellor Allen C. Meadors is bullish on the prospects for a winning program.

“I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people,” Chancellor Meadors told the Football Advisory Committee on August 16. “I don’t think we will need four years to become competitive.”

Kenney delivered an update to the committee. The committee will assist the athletic director in reviewing applications and interviewing candidates.

“I believe the requirements that the coach have a master’s degree and five years coaching experience will keep the number of applicants below 200,” he said. “This is a faculty teaching slot.”

The position was advertised with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), American Football Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association.

The position will remain open until filled.

“We don’t want to restrict ourselves,” Kenney said. “The perfect candidate may not become available until late in the process.”
Applications will be available to committee members, and the first “cut” will be in September, Kenney said.

The Football Advisory Committee is composed of Bob Caton (former trustee), Steve Bourquin (faculty), Mac Campbell (former trustee), Carl Meares (trustee chair), Alphonso McRae (UNCP Athletic Hall of Fame member), Jesse Oxendine (former UNCP football player) and Dick Taylor (trustee). The committee will meet next on September 14.

“The head coach is the key to a start-up program,” Kenney said. “We are asking you to think about what qualities we want in a coach.”

“We are seeking someone with public relations skills, someone who can relate to our community and our community can relate to,” he said. “Our coach should be an unbelievable spokesman for the University and have unbridled enthusiasm for the program.”
