Atkinson joins UNCP as an instructional designer
A new position in the Teaching and Learning Center at UNC Pembroke will assist professors with on-line courses.
Jason Atkinson was hired in July as UNCP’s new instructional designer. He will assist in the design, development and implementation of on-line courses and e-learning systems. He will also assist faculty with integrating technology into the classroom.
A 2002 UNCP graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education, Atkinson will also teach an on-line class in the Music Department. He earned a Master of Arts in education degree in instructional technology from East Carolina University (ECU) in 2004, and he is completing work on a Master of Arts in music education at UNCP.
On-line course enrollment has surged at UNCP to more than 1,000 students from its beginning in 2000.
Atkinson’s primary focus will be in assisting UNCP’s growing on-line course offerings and promoting the quality of instruction that is delivered using e-learning technologies.
“I will consult with faculty to assist them with e-learning and web-enhanced course materials,” Atkinson said. “I will also conduct research and evaluation of learning objects, instructional development tools, and tool kits for implementing e-learning course materials.”
In the new position, Atkinson will also consult with professors who are using on-line and interactive technologies to augment classroom instruction. He has experience on both sides of on-line instruction.
“My entire instructional technology program was online,” Atkinson said. “On-line instruction continues to evolve and, like classroom instruction, is challenging. “I have been on both sides of the spectrum, first as an online learner and currently as an online instructor and understand the challenges that are associated with it. This will be beneficial as I consult with faculty regarding e-learning methodology.”
A Bladenboro, N.C. native who resides in Dublin, N.C., Atkinson comes to UNCP from East Bladen High School, where he was band director. He is also minister of music for the First Baptist Church of Dublin.
As an undergraduate at UNCP, Atkinson was a recipient if the Doris B. Johnson Scholarship in the Music Department, and he won the UNCP Music Faculty Award, given annually for service to the department. His band at East Bladen High School received straight superior ratings every year at the North Carolina High School Concert Band Festival. At ECU, Atkinson was nominated for the Outstanding Instructional Technology Graduate Award.
