A gift from Jerry Johnson Chevrolet of Lumberton, N.C. will put UNC Pembroke’s broadcast program on the road, literally.

The General Motors dealership donated a 2004 GMC utility van to UNCP’s broadcasting program. It will be used as a mobile production unit to create live and taped programming from remote locations.
“We will use the van for mobile productions with multiple cameras,” said Mike DeCinti, a broadcasting instructor in the Department of Mass Communications. “It will be a mobile studio for shooting live programs on campus or taped shows off-campus.”
“Immediately, this will help with our live sports broadcasts,” Professor DeCinti said. “It gives us capabilities we have never had before.”
UNCP’s student-run WNCP-TV provides live and taped programs, including news, talk and sports, for cable channel 6 on the local Time Warner Cable system. Selected programs are also rebroadcast on PAX-TV, Channel 62.
Jerry Johnson said he realized an opportunity to help UNCP’s students.
“I got to know Mike through Robeson Road Runners in Lumberton, and I have always been impressed with what he does at UNCP,” Johnson said. “I wanted to help out the broadcasting program and his students.”
Mass Communications Department Chair Dr. Jamie Litty thanked Johnson for his gift.
“This generous gift will be a great benefit for broadcasting instruction at WNCP-TV,” Dr. Litty said. “It is gifts like this one that build truly outstanding programs.”
Prof. DeCinti is already planning more programs.
“We have had requests from the region to tape programs, and now we can back up the van and go to them,” he said. “We would also like to do live outdoor sports programming, and this gift gets us closer to that goal.”
