Schwarze named state’s top addiction professional
Mark Schwarze, coordinator of UNC Pembroke’s alcohol program, was named North Carolina’s 2005 Outstanding New Addiction Professional at the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina’s (APNC) fall conference and awards banquet held at Carolina Beach, N.C., on October 26.
APNC is the state affiliate of the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
Schwarze entered the substance abuse field in 2001 working in prevention and intervention at Palmer Prevention, Inc. in Lumberton, N.C. For Palmer, he developed and led two programs, Robeson County Teen Court Program and Palmer Music Industry Program, both aimed at providing alternatives to drugs and alcohol to high-risk adolescents. Schwarze did extensive writing for local media that commented on the stigma of addiction in rural settings, as well as serving on the Treatment Committee for APNC.
In 2002, he accepted a position as a counselor in the Intensive Outpatient Program at the Wilmington (N.C.) Treatment Center. Schwarze continued to advocate for those with the disease of addiction. He also wrote a series of articles on addiction in Encore Magazine, a Wilmington publication.
In 2005, Schwarze joined UNCP as counselor and coordinator of the Coalition to Prevent Alcohol-Related Consequences (C-PARC), a program that is part of a national research project funded by the NIAAA and the Wake Forest School of Medicine that aims to reduce underage and high-risk drinking among college students.
Schwarze has a master’s degree in service agency counseling from UNCP and is a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor as well as a Clinical Supervisor Intern. He is currently pursuing the Licensed Professional Counselor credential and is a member of the American Counseling Association, National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors and the Addiction Professionals of North Carolina.
