Marson is 2005 N.C. Social Worker of the Year

UNC Pembroke Professor Stephen M. Marson is North Carolina ’s 2005 Social Worker of the Year.

Stephen MarsonDr. Marson, a Lumberton, N.C., resident, will be honored by the North Carolina chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) on March 11 at the Conference on Ethics in Raleigh, N.C.

Dr. Marson’s social work career spans 35 years and focused on gerontology, forensics, education and ethics in social work. He joined UNCP’s faculty in 1977.

“I was surprised, delighted and honored when I received the phone call from Raleigh explaining that I was selected by the awards committee,” Dr. Marson said.

"I was particularly delighted to learn that Melissa Hunt, one of my former students and student worker, nominated me for this great honor,” he said. “As far as I am concerned when a graduate goes through all the paper work to make the nomination, it really says something.”

At UNCP, Dr. Marson teaches undergraduate courses in social work, including social policies and justice, research and statistics, s gerontology, values and ethics, human behavior and social environment and economic justice.

Dr. Marson recently founded the on-line Journal of Social Work Values and Ethics, serving as founding, senior editor and book review editor. He worked for the Journal of Law and Social Work as an editor of manuscripts and book review editor.

A member since 1975, Dr. Marson’s involvement and dedication to the NASW is extensive.

Nationally, Dr. Marson has participated in several committees, including the School Social Work Committee and Technology Committee. He has served as chair of the Examination Review Committee, as well as chair of the Technology and Social Work Task Force. He has also worked with the Competence Certification Commission.

Dr. Marson is a past vice president of the N.C. NASW board of directors and member of the executive committee. He has served as chair and member of the Recognition and Awards Committee, as well as conference planning committees and the Technology Advisory Panel.

Active in his local community, Dr. Marson serves on the Robeson County Welfare Planning Board and is a member of both the Transportation Committee and the Networking Committee. He also currently serves on Southeastern Regional Medical Center’s Institutional Research Board and the board of directors of Hospice of Robeson County. Dr. Marson also serves on the board of directors for the Rural Program for the Carolinas, as well as the Center for Community Action of Lumberton.

In 1978, Dr. Marson established a private practice, Marson & Associates, dedicated to consultation, research, case and group work and educational services primarily for the elderly and social science research for attorneys.

Dr. Marson earned a doctorate in sociology from North Carolina State University, specializing in aging and social psychology. He obtained a Master’s of Social Work from Ohio State University with emphasis in human sexuality and substance abuse and earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio Dominican University.
