Women’s Golf to be added to Slate of UNC Pembroke Athletic Teams

Women’s golf joined the list of varsity athletic teams at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke following approval of the Board of Trustees on September 1.

Athletic LogoThe addition of women’s golf in fall 2006 and football in 2007 will increase the number of UNCP teams sanctioned by the NCAA to 16.

“We are very excited that the Board of Trustees has approved the addition of women’s golf,” said Chancellor Dr. Allen Meadors. “The decision to add women’ s golf will provide future UNCP student-athletes with an excellent opportunity to continue participating at the varsity level.”

UNCP will be the fourth member of the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) to sanction women’s golf. Armstrong Atlantic State added women’s golf last December. Augusta State participates as a Division I independent. And USC Upstate will begin play later this fall.

The PBC would need a total of six member institutions to have women’s golf in order to hold a championship tournament. Lander University could become the fifth team, as it has begun the process of studying the feasibility of adding a women’s golf program.

Current men’s coach David Synan will be charged with running the women’s program. His goals are to bring in eight to 10 recruits from a wide variety of areas and backgrounds that who be able to compete immediately.

"I am extremely excited about women's golf coming to UNCP and expanding the UNCP golf family,” Synan said. “I will strive to bring in talented, strong, driven individuals who will be a positive addition to our athletic department and University as a whole."

UNC Pembroke is right in the middle of golf country, as it is located between Pinehurst, N.C., which recently hosted the 2005 U.S. Open, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., a mecca of sorts for golf fanatics from around North America.
