UNCP dedicates Mac and Sylvia Campbell Wellness Center

The new Wellness Center at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is one of the most popular places on campus to work up a sweat.

On a pleasant and sunny April 13, the Mac and Sylvia Campbell Wellness Center, located in the English E. Jones Athletic Center, was dedicated. The nameplate was unveiled inside the center, which features state-of-the-art fitness equipment under 30-foot ceilings.

A gift from the Elizabethtown, N.C., couple to the First and Ten Campaign for Football and Athletic Excellence landed the naming rights. Mac Campbell is a 1968 UNCP graduate, a former president of the Braves Club, a member of the Football Advisory Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees that hired Chancellor Allen C. Meadors.

Surrounded by family and friends, Campbell said, “This is a special day for us. “We believe in this University and the service it provides to our community, the region and the state.”

“This is a special place,” he said. “I was pleased to have been here when Chancellor Meadors came to the University. He is a man with a great vision for the future of the University.”

Chancellor Meadors, who is campaigning to bring football to a growing University, returned the compliment.

“Mac and Sylvia Campbell are committed, involved and good stewards of their community,” Chancellor Meadors said. “They are role models for all of us.”

“It’s not hard to be a visionary, but it is very hard to do something about it,” he said. “Mac and Sylvia Campbell are making it happen here. This is a family that is committed to serve others.”

An Elizabethtown, N.C. native, Mac Campbell went to work in his father’s petroleum distribution business “as soon as I was old enough to drive a truck.” Campbell Oil and Gas Company was founded in 1950, and three of Campbell’s sons work in the business today.

Campbell Oil has grown with offices spread out over much of Eastern North Carolina. It is a diversified distributor of petroleum products that also owns and operates 18 convenience stores.

Sylvia Campbell attended UNCP until starting a family, which has grown into four children and nine grandchildren. She is mayor pro-tem of Elizabethtown and choir director for the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church.

Besides his work with UNCP’s Braves Club, Mac is president of NC State University’s Wolfpack Club and a member of the North Carolina Board of Transportation. In 2001, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics.
