UNCP detective to head law enforcement association

Detective Sergeant Ed Locklear of UNC Pembroke’s Department of Police and Public Safety, was elected Dec. 8, 2005, to serve as president of the Robeson County Law Enforcement Executive Officer’s Association.

Ed LocklearThe association consists of all law enforcement agencies in Robeson County, including the district attorney’s office. Among its programs, the association sponsors the annual Arthur W. Oxendine Memorial Shooting Championship to fund college scholarships.

“Working to increase our fundraising to benefit the scholarship program is high on our list of goals for 2006,” Locklear said. “My wife received a scholarship from the association, so I know how important financial aid can be.”

Detective Locklear said he would work on the law enforcement association’s other major mission: to improve communications between law enforcement agencies in the county with the goal of crime reduction.

“This is an important organization because it works to improve communications across the county,” he said. “Sitting down once a month creates better working relationships and helps reduce crime.”

A Pembroke area native, Locklear’s law enforcement career began with the Pembroke Police Department in 1996, first as a patrolman then as a school resource officer. For the past four years, Locklear has been employed at UNCP, where he has been responsible for investigations and crime prevention services.

Detective Locklear earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from UNCP in 2004 and is enrolled in its Master of Public Administration program in the criminal justice area.

He is the third UNCP officer to lead the county association.
