UNC Pembroke inks first football recruits
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke football Coach Pete Shinnick announced February 1 the signing of the University’s first recruits to national letters-of-intent.
Jerry Jones and Brandon McLaurin played at South View High School in nearby Hope Mills, N.C. They will enroll in the fall 2006.
“This is a great day for UNCP Football and for Jerry and Brandon,” Shinnick said. “These two young men have taken a big step for themselves, but even a bigger step for the future of Braves’ football.”
Jones, a 6-3, 256-pound offensive lineman, was named to the 2005 Two Rivers All-Conference team and was Time Warner’s Player of the Game twice. He was a three-year starter and was a team captain as a senior. Jones, whose cousin J.J. Jones was a former lineman at NC State, is a member of the National Honor Society.
A 5-11, 185-pound running back, McLaurin was a 2005 Two Rivers All-Conference first team selection and was the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. He was also honored by Mid-South Sports with the Lloyd Foster Extra Effort Award for his play against Cape Fear High School. He took home the DK Sports Player of the Game honors in the Tigers’ victory over Apex High School.
McLaurin ran 961 yards on 135 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. He caught four passes for 18 yards and had one kickoff return for 33 yards. McLaurin also posted five runs of 40 or more yards, including an 82-yard touchdown run against Purnell Swett High School and a 50-yard scoring jaunt versus Pine Forest High School.
“Having these two young men as a part of the UNCP football family is a giant step in the right direction,” Shinnick said. “They are very skilled on the football field, but they also take care of business in the weight room and in the classroom.”
“We are very excited that Jerry and Brandon have given us a great start to building a lasting foundation for football at UNC Pembroke,” Shinnick said. This is only the beginning, and we have only begun to scratch the surface of something special.”
