UNCP unveils 2007 football schedule
Five home games and two against NCAA Division I-AA opponents and six outings against teams in the Carolinas highlight the 2007 football schedule that was released October 4 at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. View Schedule.
UNCP, which announced the return of football in 2004, will don pads for the first time in more than 50 years on Sept. 1, 2007, when the Braves travel to Davidson, N.C., to battle the Division I-AA Wildcats in Richardson Stadium.

Season ticket information for UNCP’s 2,500-seat Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field was also released. Season tickets, which go on sale in spring, 2007 are $60 for five home games.
Altogether, the Braves will face two Division I-AA, six Division II, one Division III and two NAIA opponents in an 11-game season.
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors opened the press conference that was staged in the Native Angels Braves Club Room in Jones Athletic Complex.
“This is an exciting day,” said Chancellor Allen C. Meadors. “A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time. There are some people who have been waiting for the last 55 years.
“Next year, you’re going to see a schedule that, by no means, is a light schedule,” Chancellor Meadors said. “Nine of the teams we are playing have been playing for a number of years. One program will be in their first season and one will be in their second.
“I have it on good authority, not from the coaches because they don’t want to go out on a limb, but our players are ready,” he said. “This is an exciting time not only for the students and the student-athletes, but also for a region that loves football.”
The Braves will open their 2007 home campaign on September 8 when the Division III Greensboro Pride roll into Pembroke for a 1 p.m. kick-off. Wingate University will be on campus on September 15 as the Braves’ first Division II opponent.
Consecutive road games follow at Jacksonville University (Division I-AA) and Chowan College (Division II). The Braves return for a homecoming contest with Brevard College (Division II) on October 6 followed by a home date with West Virginia Wesleyan on October 13. All home contests in 2007, with the exception of the match-up with Brevard, are slated to begin at 1 p.m. UNCP’s homecoming date with the Brevard will kick-off at 2 p.m.
“I like our chances right now because we’ve got a good group of guys on campus, and we’re in the process of recruiting another good group that we can build with,” said UNCP head football coach Pete Shinnick. “In starting with Davidson, you’re starting with a Division I-AA opponent that has a great reputation and is a great university.
“I know we’re excited for the challenge,” Shinnick said. “We’re looking forward to everything we do now building toward September 1.
“(Our players) know we’re building toward a game,” he said. “Now, we’ve got the name of the opponent, and we’re excited about that.”
UNCP’s second trip to Jacksonville, Fla., will take the Braves to Edward Waters College on October 20, before closing out the home schedule on October 27 against Faulkner University.
A pair of road dates against Concord College on November 3 and North Greenville College on November 10 will close out the 2007 regular season slate.
