UNCP honors students for community service

If charity begins at home, community service does too.

In what has become a family tradition, Christelle Lebeau received the Outstanding Leadership Award at the annual Leadership and Service Opportunities Program (LSOP) awards ceremony on April 25 at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Her sister, Genevieve, won it last year.

“This is really great because I nominated my sister last year,” Lebeau said. “I did most of my work with kids at Southeastern Family Violence Center. I am an elementary education major, so it was a good experience.”

Lebeau, a junior from Canada, volunteered for three years at the shelter. She is a member of the University Honors College, Alpha Chi Honor Society and Sigma Delta Pi Spanish language honor society and a founding member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin service sorority. Lebeau also organized the University’s first LatinoFest.

Lebeau and 54 UNCP students received Distinguished Leader Awards for performing more than 50 hours of community service. Seventeen freshmen earned Horizon Leader awards for doing 30 hours of community service. Nine students won Leadership Fellows awards for 150 hours, and 15 were awarded $1,000 NC ACTS scholarships for 300 hours.

More than 900 LSOP participants at UNCP logged more than 12,000 volunteer hours during the year for a new University record, said Abdul Ghaffar, director of Student Activities. Ghaffar, who launched the program seven years ago, will leave the University in May.

“We started this program in 1999 with 52 students,” he said. “I thought our students should get the high quality leadership program they deserved. Today, LSOP is one of the finest leadership programs in North Carolina and the Southeast.”

“This is a student-driven program,” he said. “The growth of the program proves that our students are committed.”

Chancellor Allen C. Meadors praised the program and advocated the “persistence of service over a lifetime.”

“Being a good example for others is never a wasted effort, and serving your fellow man is an essential part of a complete life.” Chancellor Meadors said. “This is one of my favorite programs on campus.”
