UNCP lands a quarterback from California

UNC Pembroke head football coach Pete Shinnick announced the addition of quarterback Matt Evans, of St. Bonaventure in Venture, Calif.

He joins over 90 other players who committed to the Braves’ first recruiting class.

“Matt is a great addition to the team,” said Head Coach Pete Shinnick. “He will bring a winning attitude and great work ethic to the team.”

“Even though I have played a role in the recruiting process, Coach Steve
Carson and Coach Shane Richardson really deserve all the praise for doing such a wonderful job putting together our first team,” Shinnick said. “They have gotten out to all the local high schools and have really hit the pavement running since coming on board in January. They both really believe in what we are doing here and what we are trying to accomplish at UNCP.”

Evans was a four-year letterman and all-state quarterback. He directed the Seraphs to the state championship as a senior and was tabbed to all-state and all-county teams. Evans, who is 6’-0” and 195 pounds, also led St. Bonaventure to a number one ranking in California and a number 13 national ranking among high school teams.

“This is a great opportunity to build a program and to be a part of something special and new,” Evans said. “I really liked the similarities between UNCP Chancellor (Allen C.) Meadors and Brother Paul (St. Bonaventure’s headmaster). Both know the students by name and are involved on campus each day.”

Shinnick and his staff, which will grow by two assistants at summer’s end, continue to recruit the class of 2006 and started recruiting for 2007. On-campus tryouts in April were a success with more than 40 athletes participating in running and agility drills.

Recruiting is not the only thing that is moving along at a quick pace. The Braves fund raising campaign, “The First and Ten Campaign,” is gaining steam and has brought in more money to the University in the last year than ever before.
