Jesse Dobbin, Shakeeta Spears and Shekila Melchior participated in the four-day event that was entitled, “Working Together to Achieve Social, Educational, Economic and Political Empowerment.”

Dobbin, a Fayetteville, N.C., senior and president of the campus NPHC chapter and vice president of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, said the meeting was valuable.

“It was a great experience to meet and network with students who serve in the same roles on their campuses that we do at UNCP,” he said. “The sessions gave us focus on important goals and opportunities.”

The Southern region is very large, stretching west to Alabama, so there was a large group at the conference,” Dobbin said.

Spears, a senior from Sampson County and a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority, said the UNCP contingent worked hard.

“It was a good experience, and we had meetings every day,” she said. “I liked Miami, and I’d like to go back and see more.

“We met a lot of people,” Spears said. “We learned how to be a leader and how to make a difference on our campuses, at our jobs and in our communities.”

The third member of the contingent, Shekila Melchoir is president of Zeta Phi Beta and treasurer of the campus NPHC chapter.

The conference-related travel and hotel arrangements were funded through the Office of Greek Life, said director Sara Jahansouz.

“I am very pleased that the Office of Greek Life could assist NPHC with costs associated with conference attendance,” Jahansouz said. “The Office of Greek Life looks forward to assisting other governing boards with values-based leadership development opportunities.”
