Robert Cooper named UNCP’s director of Student Life
Robert N. Cooper was named director of the Office of Student Life at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke effective July 10.
Cooper will coordinate a variety of student activities and advise student organizations. He previously served Student Life as assistant director.
He reports to Dr. Diane Jones, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
Cooper brings a wealth of Student Life experience to UNCP,” Dr. Jones
said. He is very student centered and seeks the input and involvement
of students in his
planning and implementation of programs and activities.
“He is open-minded about new programs and ideas and will be involved in many collaborative efforts with other departments across campus,” Dr. Jones said. “Mr. Cooper has a strong work ethic and we look forward to his new leadership in Student Life.”
The Office of Student Life is responsible for coordinating student organizations, including the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Association of Campus Entertainment (ACE). Programming responsibilities at Student life include the Distinguished Speaker Series and University events like Parents Weekend.
Cooper said maintaining many of the traditional programs is key to his job, but there are significant opportunities for the future.
“I’m all about traditions and maintaining them,” Cooper said. “We have many strong programs, and I am very excited about the upcoming year for SGA and ACE. We have some very strong student leadership in place.”
Educational and cultural programs will be emphasisized, he said.
“We will create some new opportunities for overall student development,” Cooper said. “We will focus on the life experience students have in their college years.”
The advent of football in 2007 and the construction of the University Center Annex present major opportunities.
“With football coming, we will be able to do quality weekend programming,” he said. “Pep rallies and evening events are in the plan.
“The new Annex will give us more space to work with,” Cooper said. “I’m a believer in the mall concept – multiple activities for different types of students.”
A Richmond, Va., native, Cooper worked in student affairs administration at colleges in Virginia and Kentucky before coming to Pembroke.
At Roanoke College, he served as assistant director of student activities, resident administrator, programming coordinator, assistant men’s and women’s track coach and game room manager. At Union College, Cooper was director of student activities and taught freshmen seminar.
Cooper’s involvement in campus organizations goes back to his undergraduate days at Lynchburg College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in child development and a Master’s degree in educational leadership.
