UNCP accounting student awarded free CPA exam

UNC Pembroke graduate Ron Emanuel used his talents for accounting to do good work in the community, and it earned him a ticket to take the state Certified Public Accountant examination.

Ron EmanuelFrom Maxton, N.C., Emanuel graduated May 6 with magna cum laude honors and a 3.74 grade point average (out of 4.0). He graduated in four years while working in the library and as a peer tutor for other accounting students in the School of Business.

Emanuel said accounting is a challenging subject.

“I did pretty well in my other courses, but the accounting courses were very challenging,” Emanuel said in a post commencement interview.

His community service work with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program earned him a valuable free ticket to take the Certified Public Accountant examination. Dr. Steven Bukowy, coordinator of accounting and information technology programs at UNCP, said it is a valuable award.

“Ron was awarded a scholarship coupon by the North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners,” Dr. Bukowy said. “The scholarship coupon allows the recipient to take the four parts of the CPA exam for free in the next six months. This is about $1,000 in value.”

This spring, Emanuel spent his Saturday mornings in Red Springs, N.C., doing free income tax work for low-income clients.

“It was good experience,” he said. “Mostly, we helped Mexicans with the help of an interpreter.”

Emanuel plans to take the CPA exam in November.

“It’s better to take it now while everything is fresh,” he said.

Emanuel said he would continue his education in an MBA program in the future. In the meantime, he is preparing to move to Richmond, Va., where he will start a new job as an auditor for the state.

“Professor (Craig) Shoulders helped me get an interview,” Emanuel said. “I’ve been busy looking for an apartment since then.”
