UNCP dedicates campus landmark to Pembroke family

A campus landmark at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke was dedicated August 7, 2007, to Alicia and Whitney Jones.

A gift from their parents, Jeff and Robin Jones, earned the naming rights to the steel bridge on the Water Feature on the Quad.

Fittingly, Jeff Jones owns National Steel Erectors, a Lumberton, N.C. based company that supplies steel for large bridges and construction projects. The family resides in Pembroke, N.C., and Whitney will join the class of 2011 this fall as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow.

The family’s gift was to the University’s First and Ten Campaign for Football and Athletic Excellence.

“It is an honor to have the bridge named for our daughters,” Jeff Jones said. “Hopefully, they will excel here.”

Whitney Jones will see the dedication often because the bridge leads to the Mary H. Livermore Library, Chancellor Meadors said. He said the dedication will be a lasting treasure for the family

“We are standing at the heart of the University’s academic core,” Chancellor Meadors said. “Years from now, you will come here with your children and grandchildren to show them this dedication.”

Chancellor Meadors welcomed Whitney to the Teaching Fellow program.

“I want to welcome Whitney to the Teaching Fellows program,” he said. “This program and our teacher education program are real jewels.”

Teaching Fellows may choose among several North Carolina universities, said Karen Granger, director of UNCP’s program.

“I was very excited when I learned that Whitney had chosen our program because she is a perfect candidate,” Granger said. “This is a great day for the Jones family in many ways.”
