UNCP cuts ribbon on University Center Annex
The ribbon was cut November 7 to open the Annex of the James B. Chavis University Center on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
RIBBON CUT -- Chancellor Meadors wields the scissors for the Annex ribbon cutting. The new facility is very popular already, said Cynthia Oxendine, University Center director.
“If you are planning an event during the spring semester, you should make reservations now,” Oxendine said. “The response is overwhelming. Since opening on October 4, there have been 25 events here.”
The Annex is 19,000-square feet and cost $5 million. It features a large multi-purpose room with high-ceilings, wood dance floor, stage, sound system and food preparation areas.
The multi-purpose room is 6,200 square feet with banquet seating for 300 and conference seating for nearly 500.
In thanking those who planned, designed and constructed the Annex, Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said the new facility will be a real asset for students and the University.
“This is a great addition to campus and tremendously needed,” Chancellor Meadors said. “It returns areas like the lounge in the University Center to our students.
“It has been a labor of love for Dr. Diane Jones (vice chancellor for Student Affairs) and her staff who have worked for many years on this project.”
Besides providing more space for students, the Annex frees office space in other areas of campus because it is the new headquarters for Student Housing and Residence Life and Student Publications. There are also four conference rooms of varying sizes.
Architect and designer for the project was Pierce, Brinkley, Cease and Lee of Raleigh, N.C., and the general contractor was Metcon, Inc., of Pembroke. UNCP’s Office of Facilities Planning and Construction coordinatd work on the project.
