Beth Wilkerson to lead SBTDC
Beth Wilkerson has been named assistant director of the Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), located at UNC Pembroke’s Regional Center for Economic, Community and Professional Development at COMtech.
UNCP’s office is part of the Cape Fear Region SBTDC and provides services in Richmond, Robeson, Sampson and Scotland counties.
Wilkerson will provide management counseling and educational services to small and midsized businesses and help established, high-growth and start-up businesses meet challenges, manage change and plan for the future. The SBTDC’s primary focus is counseling in management, financing, marketing, human resources, operations, planning and feasibility assessment.
“Wilkerson is a good fit for this position because of her excellent credentials,” said Sylvia Pate, director of the Regional Center. “She has an extensive background in managerial accounting, human resource management, budgeting, market assessment and strategic planning.
“Additionally, she has many years of relevant experience in operating small, retail and service oriented businesses and experience in teaching, having taught business law and small business management at Robeson Community College.”
Wilkerson was a member of an SBTDC-sponsored MBA student competition team in 2005-06. Her team won 3rd place in state competition.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from UNCP and returned to complete her MBA in 2006.
Wilkerson completed numerous licensure programs at Fayetteville Technical Community College to include Property and Casualty Insurance, Life and Health Insurance and Notary Public. She served as human resources manager, bookkeeper and general manager for Orrum (N.C.) General Store, TLC Catering Service and Orrum Insurance Agency, Inc.
Wilkerson said small and mid-sized businesses have a strong presence in the region’s economy and that limited resources present a constant struggle for these business owners.
“The SBTDC’s mission includes assisting these businesses with the management of their resources and I look forward to being a part of the process in serving the needs of small and growing businesses in the region,” she said.
The UNCP office of SBTDC is one of 17 offices across North Carolina affiliated with a University of North Carolina campus. The SBTDC is a business development service, operated in partnership with the Small Business Administration.
