Dr. Cheryl Locklear joins UNC Board of Governors

Dr. Cheryl Ransom Locklear was sworn in on June 8 as a member of the Board of Governors for the 16-member University of North Carolina.

Cheryl LocklearA practicing dentist in Red Springs, N.C., and a resident of Pembroke, N.C., Dr. Locklear is a 1975 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and was a member of its Board of Trustees from 1995 – 2003.

Dr. Locklear said she was delighted to join the Board of Governors.

“I’m pleased and honored,” she said. “I am very interested in being a voice for UNCP. I will represent all 16 campuses, but UNCP will be represented at the table as long as I am there.”

Dr. Locklear was nominated by state Rep. Ronnie Sutton and approved by the North Carolina General Assembly. Rep. Sutton, also from Pembroke, said in a newspaper interview that UNCP and its region were due representation on the state university’s 32-member governing body.

“It was a matter of fairness,” he said. “Presently, the UNCP region does not have representation on that important board.”

Dr. Locklear is well qualified for her new role, Rep. Sutton said. Dr. Locklear credited UNCP with training her in several areas.

“UNCP prepared me for dental school, and I feel like the University trained me for this position during my eight years on the board of trustees,” she said.

New members of the Board of Governors will tour all UNC campuses this summer to prepare for office.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about all 16 UNC campuses,” Dr. Locklear said. “I’m also anxious to get back to UNCP’s campus to meet with Chancellor (Allen C.) Meadors and his executive staff.”

Dr. Locklear was a UNCP trustee from 1995 – 2003 and chair for one year. She was named a Distinguished Alumna in 1993.

Chancellor Meadors welcomed her selection to the Board of Governors.

“Dr. Locklear is an excellent ambassador for UNC Pembroke, and we are proud to have her represent us on the Board of Governors,” Chancellor Meadors said. “I am certain that she will serve our region of the state and the University well in this new capacity.”

Dr. Locklear, who has practiced dentistry for 21 years, attended UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Dentistry.

“As a dentist, I am very interested in the progress of East Carolina’s new dental school,” Dr. Locklear said.

Dr. Locklear is a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and the American Dental Association. She also earned a Master’s of Public Health degree at UNC-CH and is a past member of its Board of Visitors.

Dr. Locklear has three children. Nanci, a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, was a Morehead Scholar and is a practicing dentist. Sarah, a 2002 UNCP graduate, is completing her medical residency at UNC-CH. Christopher lives in Los Angeles, Calif. She is a member of the Berea Baptist Church of Pembroke.
