Former baseball coach Harold Ellen dies

Former UNCP baseball coach Harold T. Ellen died on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at Duke University Medical Center. He was 75.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy, and three sons who are all graduates of UNC Pembroke: David ‘80, Rick ‘88, and Rodney ‘93.

Ellen coached the baseball team for 18 seasons, compiling a 331-287 career record that included seven winning campaigns. In his first four seasons, the Braves notched 102 wins against 43 losses, including a career-best 24-8 record in 1972.

Ellen coached 16 all-Americans, as well as 33 all-district winners and 11 all-conference players. He was inducted into the UNCP Hall of Fame on Feb. 10, 2001.

Ellen received an associate’s degree from Campbell University in 1956 and completed his undergraduate studies at Elon University in 1958. He later received a Master of Education degree from East Carolina University in 1964.

He coached Fuquay Varina High School from 1958 – 1963 and broke into the collegiate coaching world at East Carolina in 1958, but moved back to the high school ranks at Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C., for the 1966-67 season.

Visitation is from 7-9 p.m. on Friday at Bryan-Lee at 300 East McIver Street, Angier, N.C., and the funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Angier Baptist Church at 155 South Hickory Street in Angier. Funeral Services will be held at Bryan Lee Funeral Home in Angier and burial at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
