UNCP dedicates Heritage Walk to its first graduates

A permanent monument to the first graduates of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke was dedicated during the 35th annual Lumbee Homecoming.

Heritage Walk was dedicated Saturday, July 7, 2007, in front of Old Main, UNCP’s oldest building. The names of more than 500 graduates, ranging from 1905 – 1954, were engraved into a brick walkway in front of the University’s oldest building.

Scores of descendants poured over the walkway for several hours locating names of family members. Maxine Locklear Amos located her father, Roscoe Locklear, one of the earliest graduates.

“I think this is a wonderful idea,” Amos said. “I’m glad to see the University recognize its first graduates this way. Often they are forgotten.”

After graduating in 1925, Locklear taught at Prospect School. The University was founded in 1887 to train Lumbee school teachers, said Dr. Linda Oxendine, former chair of UNCP’s American Indian Studies Department and co-author of a centennial history of the University.

“The University has had a considerable impact on the Lumbee people,” Dr. Oxendine said. “It gave us literacy, which could not have happened without this school.

“This school has enhanced our identity also,” she continued. “It’s about Indian people teaching Indian children in an Indian community.

“The Indian community still has cultural ownership of this school,” Dr. Oxendine said.

That ownership is never more evident than during Lumbee Homecoming, where tens of thousands of Lumbees assemble in Pembroke and at UNCP for a weeklong celebration. UNCP hosted a powwow on Saturday.

Chancellor Allen C. Meadors, who originated the idea of the Heritage Walk, spoke at the dedication.

“The 500 names represented here were leaders who took that step forward,” Chancellor Meadors said. “In the early 1900s, a college education was a remarkable achievement.

“Their leadership opened the door for the appreciation of education in this community,” he continued. “It is my hope that, as the University grows, this walk will be a permanent reminder of those people who took that first step,” he said.

Lee Sampson found his father, 1932 graduate Claud A. Sampson, and several other relatives.

“There is a story behind every name,” Sampson said.

“Courage, that’s what got them through,” said Annette Strickland as she surveyed the names.

Five graduates whose names are in the walk were present for the dedication. In the audience were Rosa Dial ‘53, Tessie Hunt ‘42 Tom Oxendine ‘48, Coolidge Mac Cummings ‘50 and Delton Ray Locklear ‘54, one of Roscoe Locklear’s children.

“My father, Roscoe Locklear, is here too,” Locklear said. “I think it’s great.”

Coolidge Mac Cummings, who went on to graduate from a Baptist seminary in Louisville, Ky., and ministered for 65 years, said it was a trip down memory lane.

“Seeing my name on a brick brought back a lot of good memories,” Rev. Cummings said. “It was wonderful to see how the University has progressed. When I was in college, it was nothing like it is today.”

Oxendine, who started college in 1938, became a World War II pilot and finished in 1948, was interviewed by TV 14 News.

“I came here to the University in 1938 when the high school was on the first floor (of Old Main) and the college was on the second floor,” Oxendine said. “I look at the list over there, and it gives me great pride.”

The names are engraved on individual bricks and placed into the renovated walkways and garden areas in front of Old Main. Facilities Architect Frank Britt designed the project and supervised its construction.

“It was completed with all local contractors, so it is constructed with Lumbee pride,” Britt said. “The bricks are engraved and then filled with lead, so they will last a very long time.”
