New Century Bancorp has made an investment in the new football program at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

The New Century Bank Athletic Training Room in UNCP’s new Bob Caton Fieldhouse was dedicated October 24.
The regional community bank was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Dunn, N.C. With assets of $590 million, the bank has branches in Pembroke, Lumberton, Raeford, Clinton, Goldsboro, Lillington and Dunn.
A contribution of $15,000 earned naming rights to the facility, which Chancellor Allen C. Meadors noted is a very busy place.
“It might be a busier facility than we’d like it to be, but we are a first year program,” Chancellor Meadors said. “On behalf of the University, I’d like to thank New Century Bancorp for this truly important gift.
“Football is as much a community project as it is a University project, and New Century is a great friend of this community,” he continued. “As the University has grown, so have the community and the bank.”
William Hedgepeth II, president and CEO, led a contingent of New Century bankers to Pembroke.
“We are honored to have our name on this fine facility,” Hedgepeth said. “We look forward to working with the University as we continue to strengthen the communities we serve.”
Pembroke Branch Manager Lucille Locklear said the relationship is a matter of vision and faith.
“I’d like to thank Chancellor Meadors for his vision for this University,” Locklear said. “I appreciate my employer, New Century, and its faith in the University and this community.
“This is the first step of a great friendship,” she said.
After a more than 50 year absence, UNCP started a football program this fall, and the Bob Caton Fieldhouse is its headquarters. The $4.5 million fieldhouse, which houses the New Century Bank Athletic Training Room, was dedicated on August 10.
New Century Bank South division entered the Robeson County market in the summer of 2006 when it purchased Progressive Savings Bank.
Among the bank’s staff on hand for the dedication were southern Regional Executive John McFayden, Vice President Jay Britt, City Executive Johnny Lee, Human Resources Director Lynn Johnson and Marketing Coordinator Dana Cochran.
