Southeastern Regional Medical Center named “Official Healthcare Provider of UNCP Athletics”

At a January 31 press conference, officials with Southeastern Regional Medical Center (SRMC) of Lumberton, N.C., and the Athletic Department of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke announced a 10-year agreement naming SRMC as the “Official Healthcare Provider of UNCP Athletics.”

The partnership meshes two signature “brands” in Southeastern North Carolina, with SRMC and UNCP working together on marketing both brands on and off each campus, UNCP’s Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said. He called the agreement “a landmark for the University.”

“I can’t thank Luckey Welsh and SRMC’s Board of Directors enough for their faith on our institutional mission,” Meadors said. “This commitment helps take our athletic programs to an all new level.

“Both UNCP and SRMC are key contributors to our region and its future success,” he continued. “New academic programs like the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and student programs like football continue to enhance the opportunities for our students and region. Partnerships with key constituents, like SRMC, are essential to these programs and the future of our region.

“Having Robeson County’s state-of-the-art medical center as our neighbor and supporter is a wonderful asset,” Chancellor Meadors said. “We take great pride in this strong working relationship, and we salute SRMC’s commitment to quality, reliability and community service. SRMC has made a commitment to the people of this community, this University and the student-athletes at UNCP.”

At the press conference, SRMC President and Chief Executive Officer Luckey Welsh said UNCP and SRMC are great partners in many projects, including the University’s BSN program, which is located on the hospital’s main campus.

“The University and Chancellor Meadors are great partners of our medical center,” Welsh said. “Chancellor Meadors had a vision to build a BSN program, and we formed a partnership that will mean a great deal to this area.

“We want to build partnerships that serve all the University’s needs in all sports including the new football program,” he said.

One of the largest employers in the region with about 2,000 employees, SRMC also includes more than 125 physicians on its medical staff, Welsh said.

“We have 2,000 employees and many are UNCP graduates including physicians who did their undergraduate work here,” he said.

UNCP Athletic Director Dan Kenney introduced his athletic training staff and noted the SRMC partnership has generated excitement in his department.

“We would like to thank Southeastern Regional Medical Center for this special partnership,” said Kenney. “Our two institutions have partnered on many previous projects, and this venture creates excitement for the future of the UNCP Athletic Department.”

A not-for-profit organization, Southeastern Regional Medical Center is the hub of a comprehensive health care system that delivers services to over 13,000 inpatients and 75,000 outpatients annually.

SRMC’s fully-accredited medical center is licensed for 314 hospital beds and 115 long-term care beds. Under the SRMC umbrella are Southeastern Heart Center, the Diabetes Community Center, Gibson Cancer Center, Woodhaven Nursing Center and Southeastern Lifestyle Center for Fitness and Rehabilitation as well as services for hospice, home care, medical equipment, occupational health, five primary care clinics, a community health education center and substance abuse treatment.
