Student housing options at UNCP get more diverse
Student housing options at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke took another leap forward on September 15 when the owners of Pembroke Pointe announced it started construction on 114 apartments for married and graduate students.

Steve Kenney, chief executive officer of Kenney Companies which owns Pembroke Pointe, announced the construction of 66 one- bedroom, 36 two-bedroom and 12 three- bedroom apartments. Pembroke Pointe is located just off campus.
The project will add 174 beds to the 1,150 off-campus beds managed by private companies, which will contribute toward the more than 400 additional beds needed to house Fall 2009’s enrollment. All current apartments are four-bedroom.
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors hailed the project.
“Off-campus housing is important to our growth because it is our resident students who are driving it,” Chancellor Meadors said. “Our enrollment has grown six percent this year.”
Kenney said the University and the town have been good partners.
“We have better town and college relations than any other place where we operate in the southeast,” Kenney said. “We were the first to offer private housing for UNCP students, and we have grown to love Pembroke.”
Kenney also made a $5,000 contribution to UNCP’s First and Ten Campaign for Football and Athletic Excellence.
The market focus for the new apartments is UNCP students, said Sherry Salama, Pembroke Pointe property manager.
“We will renovate and modernize our clubhouse, install gates and add a soccer field,” Salama said.
